(1) Burning Time

  • Rapid Fuse: The burn time shall be ≤ 3 seconds per metre (for rapid flame transfer, e.g., internal connection of a combination fireworks device).
  • Slow fuse: burning time ≥ 5 seconds / metre (for prolonging the effect or ensuring the safety distance).
  • Time error: the fluctuation range of the burning time of the same batch of fuse should be ≤±10%.

(2) Burning speed stability

  • The combustion process should be uniform and stable, without fire break, flame out, deflagration or spark splash.
  • The residue after combustion should be free of open flame to avoid the risk of re-ignition.

(3) Moisture and waterproof performance

  • The pilot light should maintain normal combustion performance in a humid environment (e.g. can still ignite normally after soaking and drying).
  • Some standards require water immersion test (e.g. 1 hour after immersion can still burn normally).

(4) Diameter of pilot light

  • The diameter should be in accordance with the design requirements, generally 1.0~3.0 mm, with the error not exceeding ±10% of the nominal value.

(5) Tensile strength

  • Pilot wire should have certain mechanical strength, can withstand normal transport and installation in the tensile force (such as ≥ 10N tensile test does not break).

(6) Appearance quality

  • The surface should be smooth, burr-free, mould-free and stain-free.
  • The outer package should be labelled with product name, burning speed, date of production, manufacturer's information and so on.

3. Detection methods

  • Burning time test: take 1 metre of pilot light, fix it horizontally and then light it, record the burning time with a stopwatch.
  • Moisture test: soak the fuse in water (or simulated humid environment) for 1 hour, take it out and dry it to test whether it burns normally.
  • Tensile test: use the tensile machine to test the maximum tensile force before the fuse breaks.
  • Safety performance test: by simulating the actual burning environment, test whether there is an accidental ignition or explosion.

4. Relevant national standards

  • GB 10631-2013 "Fireworks Safety and Quality": stipulates the general safety requirements for fireworks, including the ignition speed and materials of the fuse.
  • GB 19593-2015 "Fireworks Fuse": Specifically for the technical requirements, test methods and inspection rules of the fuse.
  • GB/T 22786-2008 "Test Methods for Fuse for Fireworks": specifies in detail the testing process of fuse.

5. Cautions

  • Sampling and testing: each batch of products need to be sampled according to the standard ratio (e.g. 5 metres per 5000 metres).
  • Storage conditions: the fuse should be stored in a dry, ventilated, light-proof environment, away from sources of ignition and high temperature.
  • Regional differences: some areas may have more stringent local standards, need to be combined with local regulations.

If export is involved, it is also necessary to comply with the standards of the target country (e.g. US CPSC, EU EN 15947, etc.).
